Nimpho 1.1 is an audiovisual installation derived from the improvised performance with the same name. Nimpho is an ode to feedback and an exploration of it’s possibilities. A mixer becomes a sound source, arduino a drum machine, a telephone a microphone. Connected in an endless self modifying loop, making a tiny modification can have a ripple effect across the whole system. Dancing on the edge of chaos and total meltdown. Fighting the need for control and letting go. Embracing the unsubtle.

I was nominated for the HKU price gemeente Utrecht 2017. Each department of HKU nominated one of their graduationg students. The seven final candidates put together an exhibition which gave an impression of their work in the final year. Hosted by the Academie galerie, where it stood for two weeks. Since the projects I did in my last year at school where either performances, or so big that they wouldn't fit into the galerie. I opted for making an installation version of nimpho.

The installation is composed of prerecorderd improvised music and visuals generated by pointing a webcam at its own playback monitor. The visuals are influenced based on analysis of frequency, amplitude and texure of the music. Because of the reflective surface of the flat screen tv, standing in front of the tv is enough to influence the visuals. Ambient light, other items in the exhibition, visitors, all became part of the feedback loop.

Gosi is a Icelandic duet that consist of music tech Andri Pétur and singer Marta Sif. The couple makes indie-dance music, inspired by all music you can dance to. Disco, punk, country, funk, and everything in between. Wielding hypnotising rhythms, magical visuals and quirky melodies, they sing their way into every dance-lovers heart.

Gosi let its first EP on the loose in september of 2017.

The band formed in 2012 when Andri discovered the magic of electronic music, and the ability to dance. Marta quickly joined in, providing vocals, harmonies and gogo dancing as needed, and they have been busy with the project ever since.

formRof is a program designed to enhance a live electronic performance. Using data from real time music analysis, as well as the performers via a Kinect sensor to generate visuals. Made to be used during live performances of Gosi, to make a spectacle of the musicians as well as the music.

Visuals are programmed in c++ using openFrameworks, and music analysis is done with max. Input data is for example mapped to movement, colours and scene changes of the video.

I handled prototyping for the synthesis/sampling engine of the Neo musical instrument. I created samples for the unit, and gave a muscical presentation of it during the Soundlab of Amsterdam Dance Event.

I did the sound design and mixing of the fashion film Out of the blue, created by Olivia Watkins. The film makes a point of fashion celebrating bruises and the stories behind them; instead of covering them up. Keeping things playful is important to Olivia, and mixing jolly 8 bit sounds and a funky electronic groove with more serious brooding electronic sounds.

Repurposing 8 bit game sounds into a cinematic sound field, sounds of footsteps, jumps and tumbles were swapped out for their 8 bit counterparts.

Hávaðamál is a performance of an algorithmic audio/visual composition. It’s based on the text of Hávamál, an old Icelandic poem that tells the story when Odin visited middle-earth and gave advice on how to live life.

The output of different interpretations of the text are layered to create a composition. The centrepiece is the poem itself; half-read/half-sung in the traditional Icelandic way of reciting. From every verse, a few hand picked words are paired with an audio sample and/or video clip, which are then played back and manipulated using an algorithmic analysis of the text. The spoken words are a fixture within a constantly changing scenery of the soundscape and visuals.

Text that has been read and performed regularly since it was written 800 years ago is put into a new format. Audio samples and video clips with various amount of relation with the content of the text. Audio samples are collected from various sources and the video clips borrowed from movies made in Iceland in the 80s (most of them on the subject of vikings). Video and audio has are strong connected through the granular playback of both mediums.

The performance was premiered during the annual E-live concert in Nicolaikerk Utrecht on February 2. 2017, and a second performance was held on 8. June at K.O. showcase event in Het Nutshuis in den Haag.

Feedback is a recurring theme in my work. There is something fascinating about plugging a system into itself and dancing on the edge of chaos and total meltdown. Oscillation in a system, or between multiple systems, is a straightforward way to achieve organic movement in synthetic environment.

So I set out to explore analog musical feedback, using no input mixing, guitar pedals, and tape loops. Using a feedback system in a musical way is finding the balance between control and letting go. There are multiple variables to consider, and small modifications can have a ripple effect across the whole system. Old hardware combined with new; dripping fresh off the tip of a soldering iron. Simple building blocks accumulated to build rich sounds. NIMpho is a musical improvisation with feedback, supported by feedback generated visuals. An exploration and celebration of feedback. NIM is an acronym for ’no input mixing’ and pho indicates the soupy aroma of the mixture of sound and video.

The performance was premiered during K.O. showcase event in Het Nutshuis in den Haag on 8. June. And two performances are scheduled during HKU exposure (graduation exhibition of the HKU).
